Emerging Cyber Technologies. Implications and consequences

Lecturer: Professor David Farber (Distinguished Professor, Keio University), Professor Tobias Burgers (Project Assistant Professor, Keio University Global Research Institute)
Class Period & Day: 5th periods on Wednesdays (Spring & Autumn Semester)

The integration of digital technology through the Third Industrial Revolution (3IR) has altered existing economic, social, and political models and profoundly impacted our societies and the nature of human interaction. However, we are now on the brink of entering the 4th industrial revolution (4IR). The 4IR is different from its predecessor that it not only fuses several technologies, but also has its most significant impact in a domain it created: cyberspace. However, and despite importance on current and future affairs, there is limited knowledge of the possible consequences and implications of these emerging cyber technologies. It is worthwhile and necessary to provide students with an early-on opportunity to understand the impact, consequences, and technological background of these emerging technologies. We seek to discuss new emerging cyber technologies, such as AI, big data, deep learning, quantum computing, their technical basis, and their possible consequences and impact on economic, social, and political affairs. In this, the course not only serves as an introduction into these technologies but as well seeks to provide an interdisciplinary bridge between computer sciences and social sciences, while arising their interest in these subjects.

The Platform Economy and the Sustainable Society 1, 2

Lecturer: Professor Tatsuhiko Yamamoto (Law School, Deputy Director of Keio University Global Research Institute)
Class Period & Day: 6th periods on Tuesdays (Spring & Autumn Semester)

The role and influence of platforms are growing in various aspects, including economic transactions, media, social interactions, public health. With COVID-19, this trend will become even stronger. Platforms have the ability to solve many issues in modern society such as the aging problem, remote work, and the sharing economy, by using their data and algorithms. While expectations for these capabilities are growing day by day, there are also rising concerns about the spread of fake news, widespread slander via platforms, privacy violation through profiling, and dominance in economic markets. In this course, we will examine the potentials, the possibilities, the functions and social responsibilities of platforms, incorporating not only technological but also social and humanistic perspectives. Through the lectures and discussions, we will also consider the future that platforms will open up and what a new civilization (cyber civilization) will be. In addition, it is necessary to understand them from a global perspective, as the platforms cross borders. Therefore, in the autumn semester(「The Platform Economy and the Sustainable Society 2」), we will invite researchers from overseas research institutions (online), who are familiar with platform economy, to discuss the possibilities and challenges brought about by the globalization of platforms (It is not mandatory to take both 「The Platform Economy, the Sustainable Society 1」 in the spring semester and 「The Platform Economy, the Sustainable Society 2」 in the autumn semester. However, it is recommended to take them consecutively.). Furthermore, in this course, practitioners will participate in the lecture appropriately and engage in dialogue with the lecturers to deepen communication between "industry" and academia. We would like to provide the most advanced "knowledge" generated by practical and theoretical aspects for the students of this school, and develop leaders who will lead the cyber civilization.
