"Platforms and States: How to settle the battle of Monsters " (Series: The Monsterizing Platform Power and Law vol. 1) edited by Tatsuhiko Yamamoto, Pauline Türk & Haluna Kawashima

DX

"Platforms and States: How to settle the battle of Monsters", a book written and edited by Tatsuhiko Yamamoto (Deputy Director of KGRI), Pauline Türk (Senior Professor at Côte d'Azur University) and Haluna Kawashima (Associate Professor at Tohoku Fukushi University and Guest researcher of the KGRI) has been published by Keio University Press, as a part of the book series "The Monsterizing Platform Power and Law".

Overview of the Series

In the context of rapidly advancing science and technology, particularly artificial intelligence, new "monsters" distinct from the Leviathan (i.e., the state) are emerging, shaking the foundations of the modern legal system that presumes the dominance of the Leviathan. This series, titled "The Monsterizing Platform Power and Law" likens global mega-platforms to the Behemoth, a creature depicted alongside the sea monster Leviathan in the Old Testament (chapters 40-41, the Book of Job). It aims to explore the confrontation and control of the powers of Leviathan and Behemoth from a legal perspective, and to foresee the future of freedom and democracy (from "Introduction to the Series" by Tatsuhiko Yamamoto).

Overview of the Book

The first volume of this series examines the ideal relationship between Leviathan and Behemoth. The sovereign state, once considered to be the 'strongest' as a Leviathan, now seems to be losing its absoluteness under the challenge of DPF Behemoth. Which of these monsters should 'govern' the digital realm, and what should their relationship be? The conflict or confrontation between states and DPFs compels us to fundamentally reconsider the nature of order in the digital space.

"Platforms and Social Foundations: How to engage the Monsters" (Series: The Monsterizing Platform Power and Law vol. 4) edited by T. Isobe, H. Kawashima, Y. Shibata, G. Horiguchi and S. Mizubayashi

DX

"Platforms and Social Foundations: How to engage the Monsters", a book written and edited by T. Isobe, H. Kawashima, Y. Shibata, G. Horiguchi and S. Mizubayashi, has been published by Keio University Global Research Institute (KGRI), as a part of the book series "The Monsterizing Platform Power and Law". The original Japanese version of this book was published by Keio University Press in 2024.

Overview of the Series

Today, another "monster" that competes against the Leviathan has appeared. Accelerated by the development in information technology centered on artificial intelligence (AI), Big Tech, represented by GAFAM became a new force.
This series, titled "The Monsterizing Platform Power and Law," examines the global Big Tech using the metaphor of the sea monster, Leviathan, and the two-headed land monster described in the Old Testament, Behemoth. Specifically, it examines the antagonism between Leviathan's and Behemoth's power and ways to control them through a legal approach to try to envision the future of freedom and democracy. (from "Preface" by Tatsuhiko Yamamoto *partially reformatted).

Overview of the Book

This fourth volume in the series addresses several "social foundations": health, education, and labor. With the appearance of a new monsterized digital platforms, rather than only considering a major conflict between one thing and another, it is possible to imagine a new ally for patients, children, and workers, who will help them in their health, studies, and working lives. In the age of the digitalization of our daily life, what is expected of the state, the digital platforms, and the actors who have been playing central roles in each of these areas?
