Covid's Impact on Asia and the Challenges Ahead for Japan

A virtual seminar entitled "Covid's Impact on Asia and the Challenges Ahead for Japan" was held on October 18, 2021. The event was hosted by the Keio University Global Research Institute (KGRI) together with the "Richard Lee Armitage Commemorative Program: Building New Foundations for the Robust Japan-United States Relationship." Approximately 180 people attended the webinar.

The webinar opened with remarks from Toshihiro Nakayama (Professor of the Keio University Faculty of Policy Management and Deputy Director of the KGRI), who gave an overview of the event and KGRI's initiatives. This was followed by lectures and a panel discussion facilitated by George Nishiyama (Managing Editor of the Japanese edition of The Wall Street Journal), featuring four panelists representing different areas of expertise. The four panelists were Jin Nakahara (Professor of the Keio University School of Medicine and Deputy Director of the KGRI), Yoko Kubota (China Deputy Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal), Ken Jimbo (Professor of the Keio University Faculty of Policy Management), and Peter Landers (Tokyo Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal).

This gathering of diverse experts was created to further examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by holding complex discussions informed by first-person perspectives from front-line medical practitioners, international governmental positions, and media outlets who have been responsible for conveying information to the public. Experts from each of these varying fields were asked how they view the ongoing crisis, and what has changed before and after the pandemic.

Once the panelists finished discussing their perspectives, the remaining time was dedicated to answering questions from the audience.
