Program for the Advancement of Research in Core Projects The regulation of aging and aging associated diseases through "Optimal Nutrition"
Longevity
Summary

Metabolites and hormones induced by diet regulate gene expression and tissue function during aging. Calorie restriction is a well known intervention to extend lifespan and its downstream molecules such as sirtuins, mTOR and FOXO have a crucial role in the prevention of aging associated diseases including Alzheimer's disease, sarcopenia, type 2 diabetes, cataract and cancer. However, the molecular mechanism underlying how metabolism and diet regulate aging remain unknown. We aim to address the molecular mechanism with a concept of "Optimal Nutrition" in which metabolism regulates cellular and tissue function in gender, circadian rhythm and tissue dependent manners. As an interdisciplinary longevity cluster, the study outcome will be developed into a novel anti-aging drug or intervention.
