KGRI Lecture Series: (Dec.18, 2017) "Surface acoustic wave microfluidics for biomedical applications"

2017.11.30

The Keio University Global Research Institute (KGRI) aims to promote international research and educational exchange and invites those working in the forefront of research and education in Japan and overseas to give lectures.

On this accasion, Prof. James Friend from University of California, San Diego in USA will give a lecture titled "Surface acoustic wave microfluidics for biomedical applications" on a part of CELLLab seminar as KGRI Lecture Series.

Date and time: Monday, December 18, 2017 17:30-19:10 (Open 17:15)
Venue: 16th Building-A 3F Meeting Room, Yagami Campus, Keio University
Co-hosts: CELLLab, Keio University Global Research Institute
Language: English (No simultaneous interpretation provided.)
Other: Free admission, Open to anyone, Pre-registration not required

Summary of Lecture:
The cutting-edge medical treatments such as tissue engineering and gene therapy attract attention as new medical cares enabling effective treatments for diseases that could not be treated conventionally. Many high technologies of engineering are applied to the foundation of such treatments. Prof. Friend has been researching ultrasonic actuation technologies including surface acoustic waves (SAW) using high-frequency waves for over 20 years and has also applied the technologies to the biomedical field. In this lecture, we discuss "Researches on the application of engineering technology to the cutting-edge medical treatments" from his experiences and think about the development of engineering technologies that contribute to those treatments in Japan.

Biography:
James Friend received the B.S. degree in aerospace engineering in 1992 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology, in 1994 and 1998. He has served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs from 1999 and the Tokyo Institute of Technology from 2001 before joining Monash University in Melbourne, where he progressed from a Senior Lecturer to a Professor and the Associate Dean, research, in the faculty of engineering from 2004, and then he moved with his research team to RMIT University in Melbourne. After that, He returned to the U.S. in November 2014 as a Professor in the Center for Medical Devices and Instrumentation, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, San Diego.
Dr. Friend received the IEEE Carl Hellmuth Hertz Ultrasonics Award from the IEEE in 2015. He is also involved in the education of young researchers from Keio University and has supported the international collaborative researchers between the University of California, San Diego, and Keio University.
