Biography :
Dr. Steven M. Schmidt is an associate professor of medical psychology and the Scientific Coordinator at the Centre for Ageing and Supportive Environments (CASE) at the Department of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, Sweden. He received his PhD in medical psychology in the USA in 2005. Before moving to Sweden in 2010, much of his work was related to chronic disease prevention and management with a public health and policy focus including working as a scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and prevention. Since coming to CASE several years ago, Dr. Schmidt's research has focused on relationships among the environment, health/function, and psychosocial factors in the ageing population. Taking a predominately public health approach using multi- / inter-disciplinary teams, he applies methods from clinical trials, epidemiology, and health economics modelling. To increase the impact of research, projects generally include collaboration with knowledge users (e.g. government agencies, policy makers, industry, older people, etc.). Ongoing research projects focus on several environmental factors: housing (including neighbourhoods), public transportation, and use of technologies across generations.
