AY 2017 Armitage Program

As part of the Richard Lee Armitage Commemorative Program, the Keio University Global Research Institute (KGRI) Security Cluster hosted a graduate school seminar and symposium at the Mita Campus, to which Mr. Armitage, whose former appointments include United States Deputy Secretary of State, was invited. This program is planned to be held over a five year period from 2017 with the support of 12 Japanese companies.

Graduate School Seminar
May 25 (Thurs.) Global Research Laboratory (G-Lab), 6F East Research Building, Mita Campus
As part of this graduate school seminar, research presentations were made by four doctoral students and one postdoctoral researcher, and they received advice from both Mr. Armitage and Torkel Patterson (former Special Assistant to the President). It is planned that the presenters will visit Washington D.C. during the current academic year to complete research presentations, among other activities.

Symposium "Japan-US relations under the New US Administration"
May 26 (Fri.), Mita Public Speaking Hall (Mita Enzetsu-kan)
After the opening address by Professor Keigo Komamura, director of the Keio University Global Research Institute (KGRI), the keynote speech was delivered by Mr. Armitage, and a panel discussion followed. At the panel discussion, members of the panel Professor Yoshihide Soeya from the Faculty of Law and Mr. Hiroyuki Akita, a commentator at the head office of Nikkei Inc., were joined by Professor Yuichi Hosoya from the Faculty of Law, who acted as the moderator. Opinions were exchanged around topics such as the Trump Administration, Japan-US relations, and the latest state of affairs in East Asia.

Panel discussion

=Richard Lee Armitage Commemorative Program: Building New Foundations for a Robust Japan-United States Relationship" (Armitage Program) =
This is a program to invite the former US Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage and others to Keio to help foster talent who can work to strengthen the next generation of US-Japan relations. This program will invite Mr. Armitage and other American researchers to Keio University every year to participate in educational activities. Keio graduate school students will also be dispatched to Washington, D.C. under the program. This is intended to develop individuals who can work to strengthen US-Japan relations and tackle issues such as security challenges in East Asia. The program is implemented with the support of twelve domestically-based companies.
